String Transactions

Stringing transactions together:

  • Utilizes process information from one template (transaction) in a second template (transaction)
  • Processes two like transactions within one upload.

An example of the former would be one template creating a material (MM01), then a second template creating a corresponding info record (ME11). Because the material number is not known at the time the second data source is created, it can be passed in from the first data source after it has processed. In this example the material number is automatically assigned by the SAP system. This is set up in the Upload Mappings page.

  1. On the Record Template page, record the first transaction, in test or QA if possible, that you want to use to upload data. Make sure the Create Load File, and Open Load File options are checked. This creates the first upload template, and also the corresponding data source load file (either Excel or Access). Enter the upload data in the data source load file and save.
  2. On the Record Template page, record the second transaction, in test or QA if possible, that you want to use to upload data. Make sure the Create Load File, and Open Load File options are checked. This creates the next upload template, and also the corresponding data source load file (either Excel or Access). When the load file opens, enter the upload data, leaving blank the key field that is read in from the first load file (in the example, this is the material number), and save.
  3. On the Upload Mappings page, click New Mapping to display the Upload Mapping Wizard .
  4. Give the mapping a name and description.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Add the two templates that you just created. Make sure the templates are listed in execution order, from top to bottom.
  7. Click Next.
  8. Add the two data sources that you just created. Click Add, select the filename, the worksheet within the file, and then click OK to add the first data source. Then repeat to add the second data source.
  9. Click Finish. Now it is time to map the data sources to the templates.
  10. Make sure that the first template is highlighted and ensure that all the fields in the Upload Fields section are correctly mapped to the first data source. This can be achieved by dragging the fields from the data source over to the corresponding Mapped To column.
  11. Select the second template. In the Upload Fields section, drag the Return Value from the Data Source area over to the corresponding Mapped To section on the left. This takes the value from the first transaction and uses it for the next transaction.
  12. Ensure that any other fields in this section are correctly mapped to the second data source.
  13. When done with the mappings click Finish.
  14. Perform the upload by clicking Upload on the right of the screen.
  15. Once the upload is complete, check the Upload Results Page for details on the upload.
